Your Puppy’s First Class in Issaquah: What to Expect

  • Cancel 7 or more days before class for a full refund.
  • After the 1st class, you’ll get credit for the remaining classes.
  • After the 2nd class, or for a no-show, there’s no refund or credit.
  • What to Bring on Day One

    • Your puppy on a flat collar or harness and a regular leash
    • Plenty of small, soft, high-value treats
    • A favorite toy
    • Poop bags
    • A hungry pup! Skipping a big meal right before class makes treats more motivating.
    • Take your puppy out for a potty break before you head inside. New places are exciting, and accidents happen.

What the First Class Is Like

Expect a friendly, upbeat atmosphere. Our trainers use positive, reward-based methods, so your puppy learns that paying attention to you pays off. Don’t worry if your pup is distracted, nervous or extra wiggly the first time. That’s completely normal, and it’s exactly why classes help. Puppies learn to focus around new sights, sounds, people and dogs a little more each week.

You’ll also go home with things to practice. Short, fun sessions of a few minutes at a time, spread through the day, work better for puppies than one long session.

      After Puppy Class: What’s Next?

Once your puppy finishes a first class, there’s plenty to keep learning. Dogs can move on to Beyond Basic Obedience 102, Advanced Obedience 103 (which opens the door to Canine Good Citizen testing), agility, Nose Work for FUN! and more. For a bigger jump, our 3-week Training Camp offers Monday–Friday drop-off with several short training sessions every day.

Training also pairs well with daycare. Once your puppy is old enough and has passed a Meet & Greet, daycare gives them supervised play with other dogs, which supports the social skills they’re building in class.

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, and a little overwhelming. Between potty training, chewing and the zoomies, it’s easy to wonder where to start. For a lot of families, the answer is a puppy class. Here’s what to expect when your pup joins a class at Jax Dog Drop in Issaquah.

      Where Puppy Classes Meet

All of our training classes are held at our Issaquah location and are taught by Riverdog Canine Coaching, a trusted name in dog training for 20+ years and now part of the Jax family. Classes meet in our class building at 1500 19th Ave NW, Issaquah. Our main Issaquah location for daycare, boarding, Companion Camp and self-wash is at 1400 19th Ave NW, on the same street. Parking is available in front of or behind the 1500 building.

If you live in Bellevue or Redmond, you can still use our daycare and boarding there. Just plan on Issaquah for classes.

      Choosing Your Puppy’s First Class

Not every puppy needs the same class. Here’s how the options on our training classes page break down for young dogs:

      • Puppy Party. A social get-together for puppies, not an instructor-led class. It’s a low-key way to let your pup meet other puppies and new people in a new place.
      • Puppy Obedience 101 (2–4 months). For puppies just starting out and a great fit for first-time puppy owners.
      • Ultimate Puppy (3–12 months). For shy, high-energy or skittish puppies who need a little extra support.
      • AKC STAR Puppy 102 (5–9 months). The next step after puppy foundations, working toward the AKC STAR Puppy medal.
      • Basic Obedience 101 (5+ months). The fundamentals for older puppies and adult dogs who are new to training.
      • Surviving a Teenage Dog (5+ months). For adolescent dogs who are finding their independence and testing boundaries.
      • Across our puppy and basic obedience classes, we teach 20+ commands that strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Not sure which one fits? Call us at (425) 427-5958 and we’ll help you choose.

What Your Puppy Needs Before the First Class

To keep every puppy in class healthy, each class has vaccine requirements. Check the requirements for your class when you register on our class schedule. Classes also ask for a negative fecal test once a year.

You can send records through our vaccination form or email them to riverdog@jaxdogdrop.com.

        How to Sign Up

Upcoming classes, open spots and current prices are all listed on our class schedule. Popular classes fill up, so if you see a date that works, it’s best to register early. Every class has a limited number of spots, and some show as full well ahead of time.
